Functional Skills qualifications offer the foundation English, Maths and ICT skills needed in everyday lives
Functional Skills provide the fundamental knowledge and skills for English, Maths and ICT that people need in their everyday lives. As a nationally recognised qualification, Functional Skills can be studied in isolation or as part of a broader study programme.
The qualifications are delivered in practical ways, allowing students to apply the core knowledge gained to their everyday lives. Seen as a vital level of education to have, our Functional Skills courses will help to open the doors to progression opportunities both academically in professionally, meaning that they are suitable for students at all ages to study.
Here at Assess Education, we offer Entry Level 1, 2 and 3 qualifications in English and Maths which are ideal for those where English is their second language. Beyond these, we also offer Functional Skills Level 1 and Level 2.
As an approximate comparison, Entry Level 1 – 3 is below GCSE level, Level 1 is comparable to GCSE grades 1 – 3, and Level 2 is comparable to GCSE grade 4.
Functional Skills English Level 1
The course will cover all of the level 1 speaking, listening and communication skill standards whereby learners must complete two activities and achieve all level 1 criteria across the two activities. Students will also study the reading and writing units which are both assessed via a 45 minute exam paper. These papers will be made up of two tasks that the student will need to complete to the best of their ability.
Functional Skills English Level 2
Like the level 1 qualification, this is broken down into speaking, listening and communication skills, reading and writing. The reading exam will last 60 minutes and students will answer questions on three texts. The writing element will also last for 60 minutes, and students will complete two written tasks.
Functional Skills Maths Level 1
This qualification is suitable for those learners who want to develop their understanding and skills in mathematics. The level 1 course aims to equip learners with sound knowledge to use in every day situations and within the workplace, allowing them to solve simple problems in familiar situations.
Functional Skills Maths Level 2
Building on the level 1 course, this qualification will stretch learners knowledge and skills in mathematics a little further, giving learners the knowledge and skills to understand how mathematics applies to the world of work and in life generally. This course aims to equip learners with the confidence and knowledge needed to break down barriers.
